About this model 993 Turbo / Turbo S

The 993 Turbo stands as the final air-cooled 911 Turbo, and it introduced two changes that would define every 911 Turbo built since: twin turbochargers replacing the old single-turbo setup, and all-wheel drive replacing the notoriously unforgiving rear-drive-only layout that had made earlier Turbos genuinely intimidating. Designed by Tony Hatter and introduced for the 1995 model year, it transformed the Turbo from a specialist's car into something genuinely usable every day, without losing an ounce of its outright speed.

Power comes from a 3.6-liter twin-turbocharged flat-six making 408 hp and 398 lb-ft, with an impressive 332 lb-ft available from just 2,500 rpm thanks to the twin-turbo layout's reduced lag versus the outgoing single-turbo 964. A 6-speed manual is the only transmission ever offered, no Tiptronic automatic was available on the Turbo. All-wheel drive, borrowed and lightened from the 959, pairs with a limited-slip differential and Porsche's Automatic Brake Differential to manage all that power. Porsche quotes 0 to 60 mph in around 4.1 seconds and a 180 mph top speed.

The limited-production Turbo S followed for the 1997 model year, adding bigger K16 turbochargers and a re-mapped ECU under the X50 package to reach 450 hp, along with yellow brake calipers, cross-drilled brakes as standard, and additional aerodynamic touches including extra air inlets. Just 345 Turbo S examples were built out of roughly 6,000 total 993 Turbos, making it one of the rarest and most collectible air-cooled 911s Porsche has ever produced. Both cars share the widened rear bodywork, fixed "whale tail" rear wing housing the intercoolers, and distinctive hollow-spoke 18-inch wheels that visually define this generation's Turbo, and as the last hand-assembled, air-cooled 911 Turbo, the 993 remains the car most enthusiasts point to as the definitive expression of the nameplate.
