About this model 993 Carrera S / Carrera 4S

The Carrera S introduced a formula Porsche would return to again and again in later generations: take the naturally aspirated Carrera's drivetrain and wrap it in the 911 Turbo's widened bodywork, giving buyers Turbo presence without the added complexity or cost of forced induction. It arrived first as the rear-wheel-drive Carrera S, with the all-wheel-drive Carrera 4S following shortly after to answer demand for the same look with added traction.

Both cars use the same 3.6-liter naturally aspirated flat-six found in the standard Carrera and Carrera 4, making 282 hp and 250 lb-ft, with no power advantage over the naturally aspirated cars they're built alongside. A 6-speed manual is the only transmission offered on either car, no Tiptronic automatic was available. Performance essentially mirrors the standard Carrera and Carrera 4, since the S badge here signals different bodywork and chassis hardware rather than added output.

What the S and 4S actually deliver is the Turbo's wider rear fenders, its brakes, and its suspension tuning, all wrapped around the standard naturally aspirated drivetrain. The Carrera S kept rear-wheel drive while wearing the widebody look, distinguished from the actual Turbo mainly by its wheels, a 31mm spacer used in place of the Turbo's low-offset design, and by the absence of the Turbo's large fixed rear wing. The Carrera 4S paired that same widebody stance with the Carrera 4's viscous-coupling all-wheel-drive system, giving it noticeably better wet-weather composure than its rear-drive sibling, something period reviewers specifically praised on loose or rain-soaked surfaces where the standard Carrera's tendency toward understeer could catch drivers out. Neither S variant was offered as a Cabriolet, and both remain among the most visually striking naturally aspirated 993s built, wearing genuine Turbo hardware without the added weight, complexity, or maintenance considerations of forced induction.
