About this model 993 Carrera / Carrera 4 / Targa

The 993 holds a special place in 911 history as the last of the air-cooled cars, and Porsche used that final chapter to refine the formula rather than reinvent it. Introduced for the 1994 model year, it brought a redesigned aluminum chassis with an all-new multi-link rear suspension, finally taming the snap-oversteer reputation that had defined air-cooled 911s since the beginning, while integrated bumpers and flush-mounted glass gave the body its distinctly smoother, more modern silhouette.

Early 993 Carreras use a 3.6-liter air-cooled flat-six making 272 hp and 243 lb-ft, an evolution of the 964's engine with a redesigned exhaust and, for the first time in a 911, hydraulic valve lifters. A 6-speed manual came standard, the first time six gears were offered on a production 911, with 4-speed Tiptronic automatic available. Porsche quotes 0 to 60 mph in around 4.7 seconds and a 162 mph top speed. Starting with the 1996 model year, VarioRam variable-length intake runners lifted output to 285 hp and 251 lb-ft, meaningfully improving mid-range torque delivery without changing the fundamental character of the engine.

The Carrera 4 ran alongside the rear-wheel-drive car throughout the 993's life, using a simplified viscous-coupling all-wheel-drive system that replaced the heavier, more complex mechanical setup from the 964, tuned to improve handling balance rather than simply add grip in slippery conditions. The Targa arrived for the 1996 model year, though it's worth noting this generation still used a large glass roof panel design rather than the fully retracting system Porsche would introduce with the following 996 generation. Across the board, the 993 represents the last 911 built without the complexity, and the maintenance considerations, of a water-cooled engine, a distinction that keeps demand for clean examples strong among enthusiasts who want the classic 911 experience with modern civility.
