The Carrera S launched alongside the base Carrera when the 991 generation debuted at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show, with US deliveries beginning for the 2012 model year and running through 2016. It represented the sweet spot of the naturally aspirated 991 lineup, more performance and standard equipment than the base car, without stepping up to GTS or GT3 territory.
Where the base Carrera used a 3.4-liter flat-six, the S got its own larger 3.8-liter naturally aspirated engine, producing 400 hp and 325 lb-ft. PASM adaptive suspension came standard on the S, an option on the regular Carrera, giving buyers sharper body control right out of the box. Like the rest of the range, a 7-speed manual came standard, with the 7-speed PDK dual-clutch available as an option, and both drove through Porsche's then-new electric power steering system, standard across the 991 generation for the first time.
Porsche introduced the all-wheel drive Carrera 4S alongside the rest of the 4-series lineup in 2012, sharing the S engine and output in a widened body with a distinctive light strip across the rear. The Targa 4S followed for the 2014 model year, bringing the retractable Targa roof back to the lineup with the more powerful 3.8-liter engine and standard all-wheel drive, positioned as the more capable, more premium counterpart to the Targa 4.
