About this model 911 R (991.1)

The 911 R exists because enough enthusiasts complained loudly enough. By 2016, the 991.1 GT3 had gone PDK-only, and the GT3 RS was even more extreme, no manual, a massive rear wing, roll cage, everything aimed purely at lap time. Porsche's motorsport department answered the outcry directly, taking the GT3 RS engine and chassis, stripping away the wing and cage, and bolting in a proper manual. The result debuted at the 2016 Geneva International Motor Show and was limited to exactly 991 units worldwide.

Under the decklid sits the 991.1 GT3 RS's 4.0-liter naturally aspirated flat-six, producing 500 hp at 8,250 rpm and 338 lb-ft, with titanium connecting rods, forged pistons, dry-sump lubrication, and individual throttle bodies, in every meaningful sense a race engine wearing a street car's clothes. Porsche paired it with a 6-speed manual gearbox derived from the 997.2 GT3, updated for the 991 platform and fitted with a dual-mass flywheel and rev-matching that can be switched off for purists who want to heel-toe themselves. No PDK was ever offered.

Visually, the 911 R looks deliberately understated next to its GT3 RS sibling. It carries over the RS front bumper and brake cooling ducts, but drops the fixed rear wing for a smaller conventional spoiler and swaps the aggressive bodywork for Carrera-based panels with carbon fiber sills, weighing in 110 lbs lighter than the GT3 RS it's built from. Inside, carbon fiber bucket seats trimmed in Pepita houndstooth fabric nod directly to the interior of the original 1960s 911, and a numbered aluminum badge on the passenger side marks each car's place in the production run.

  • Model year: 2016 (991.1)
  • Engine: 4.0L naturally aspirated flat-six (GT3 RS-derived), 500 hp, 338 lb-ft, 8,800 rpm redline

  • Curb weight: 3,021 lbs, 110 lbs lighter than the contemporary GT3 RS
  • Production: strictly limited to 991 units worldwide
  • Notable: built specifically to restore a manual transmission to GT3 RS running gear, Pepita houndstooth interior pays tribute to the original 1960s 911
