About this model 911 GT3 (991.1)

The 991.1 GT3 arrived as a genuine revelation wrapped in real controversy. Porsche unveiled it in March 2013, with first UK deliveries that November and US model years running 2014 through 2016, fittingly timed to the 911's 50th anniversary. On paper, it broke from every GT3 that came before it: no manual transmission, no hydraulic steering, and no Mezger-derived engine, the defining traits purists expected simply weren't there.

In their place, Porsche fitted an all-new 3.8-liter direct fuel injection flat-six, developing 475 hp at 8,250 rpm with a 9,000 rpm rev limit, paired exclusively with a 7-speed PDK, no manual was offered at launch. Electromechanical power steering replaced the previous hydraulic setup, and rear-axle steering made its debut on a 911 here for the first time, turning the rear wheels up to 1.5 degrees to sharpen low-speed agility while adding stability at high speed. The result was a 3.3 second run to 60 mph, a 196 mph top speed, and a sub-7:30 Nürburgring lap, genuine credentials even without a stick shift.

Early production wasn't without trouble. Porsche recalled the first 785 cars built over engine fire concerns and replaced the affected units, a well-documented chapter that led to more conservative tuning on the GT3 RS and 911 R that followed. Inside, fixed-back carbon fiber bucket seats forced a proper race-driving position, with no rear seats at all, just a roll cage stiffening the chassis and protecting occupants, wrapped in Alcantara, carbon fiber, and aluminum trim throughout.

  • Model years: 2014 to 2016 (991.1)
  • Engine: 3.8L naturally aspirated flat-six, 475 hp, 9,000 rpm redline
  • 0 to 60 mph: 3.3 seconds
  • Transmission: 7-speed PDK only, no manual offered
  • Notable firsts: first rear-axle steering on a road-going 911, first GT3 without a manual transmission option
