The Speedster nameplate goes all the way back to the 356 of the 1950s, and the 2019 edition brought it back as a proper send-off for the 991 generation. Porsche first showed it as a concept at Goodwood Festival of Speed in July 2018, timed to Porsche's 70th anniversary of sports car production, then greenlit the production version at the New York Auto Show in April 2019. It became the last 991.2-generation GT car to roll off the line, and the first Speedster ever developed directly by Porsche Motorsport, the division responsible for the GT3 and GT3 RS.
Under the decklid sits a tuned version of the 991.2 GT3's 4.0-liter naturally aspirated flat-six, here producing 502 hp and 346 lb-ft thanks to upgraded fuel injectors and GT3-derived individual throttle bodies, Porsche's most refined take on that engine at the time. It's paired exclusively with the 6-speed manual borrowed from the GT3, sending power to the rear wheels only, good for a 3.8 second run to 60 mph and a 192 mph top speed. GT3 suspension and rear-axle steering carried over as standard equipment.
The body tells the real story. Built on a 4S Cabriolet silhouette but wearing carbon fiber front fenders, hood, and front and rear bumpers from the GT3 Touring, the Speedster gets a shorter, more steeply raked windshield and lower side windows for a genuine speedster profile. Twin streamliner humps molded into the rear decklid, formed from carbon fiber, house a manually operated fabric top underneath, no power folding mechanism here, keeping with the car's weight-conscious philosophy. Production was capped at 1,948 units worldwide, a direct nod to the year Porsche built its first sports car, with only 588 allocated to US customers.
