About this model 987.2 Cayman R

Porsche reserves the R designation for something special, a nod back to the 1967 911 R, and the Cayman R that debuted at the 2010 Los Angeles Auto Show earned the name honestly. Rather than simply adding power, Porsche took the Boxster Spyder's stripped-down philosophy and applied it to the fixed-roof Cayman, creating the most focused, driver-first Cayman built up to that point.

Power comes from the same 3.4-liter direct-injected flat-six as the Cayman S, tuned up 10 hp to 330 hp via a new head pipe, reworked exhaust, and revised ECU mapping, with torque unchanged at 273 lb-ft. A 6-speed manual is standard, with 7-speed PDK available. Porsche quotes 0 to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds with the manual, 4.7 with PDK and Sport Chrono, and a 175 mph top speed, edging out the standard Cayman S on every measure.

The real story is what Porsche removed rather than what it added. Aluminum doors, fixed-back sport seats, lightweight wheels borrowed from the motorsport department, and the deletion of standard convenience items like radio and air conditioning brought curb weight down 121 lbs versus the Cayman S, to a claimed 2,855 lbs. Ride height dropped 20mm on a specially adapted sport suspension, and a limited-slip differential came standard rather than optional. The resulting power-to-weight ratio, Porsche noted at launch, actually beat the contemporary 911 Carrera, a genuinely rare moment where the Cayman line embarrassed its own big brother on paper.

  • Model year: 2010 to 2012 (987.2 generation)
  • Engine: 3.4L naturally aspirated flat-six with direct fuel injection, 330 hp, 273 lb-ft
  • 0 to 60 mph: 4.7 seconds (PDK with Sport Chrono)
  • Transmission: 6-speed manual standard, 7-speed PDK available
  • Notable firsts: first Cayman to beat the contemporary 911 Carrera's power-to-weight ratio
