Porsche's 2009 facelift of the Cayman wasn't cosmetic tinkering, it was a ground-up overhaul of the parts that mattered most. Facing incoming Euro 5 emissions standards and lingering reliability concerns with the outgoing engine, Porsche used the opportunity to fix the Cayman's weak points while making it quicker and more efficient at the same time.
The base 987.2 Cayman grew from 2.7 to 2.9 liters, now with direct fuel injection, making 265 hp and 221 lb-ft, a meaningful step up from the outgoing 987.1's 245 hp. A 6-speed manual is standard, and this generation introduced the 7-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission as an option, replacing the old Tiptronic automatic entirely. Porsche quotes 0 to 60 mph in about 5.4 seconds and a 165 mph top speed, with PDK-equipped cars running slightly quicker still.
The move to direct injection eliminated the intermediate shaft (IMS) bearing design that had plagued earlier water-cooled Porsche flat-sixes, addressing the single biggest reliability concern buyers had with the 987.1. Updated styling brought LED daytime running lights and a reshaped rear diffuser, while the hydraulic steering rack carried over unchanged, still praised today for its directness and feel. Combining that fixed reliability with genuinely improved performance and updated technology is why the 987.2 generation is widely considered the sweet spot of this era for buyers seeking usable, modern-feeling classic Porsche ownership.
