About this model 987 Boxster S

The 987 Boxster S carried the enthusiast's-choice reputation forward from the 986 generation, and Porsche made sure the numbers backed it up. Launched alongside the base 987 Boxster for the 2005 model year, it paired the completely redesigned chassis and 997-inspired interior with a genuinely stronger engine, closing the gap to the 911 further than any previous Boxster S had managed.

Early cars, built through 2006, use a 3.2-liter naturally aspirated flat-six making 280 hp and 236 lb-ft, up from the outgoing 986 S's 258 hp. A 6-speed manual is standard, with 5-speed Tiptronic S available. Porsche quotes 0 to 60 mph in around 5.5 seconds and a 167 mph top speed. For the 2007 model year, displacement grew to 3.4 liters, lifting output to 295 hp and improving the sprint to 60 mph to roughly 5.4 seconds, matching the contemporary Cayman S introduced that same year.

The S retains the larger brakes and dual exhaust that distinguished it from the base car in the outgoing generation, now paired with the 987's stiffer chassis and hydraulic power steering, a combination period reviewers repeatedly praised as offering some of the best steering feel of any Porsche built at the time. Porsche Active Suspension Management became available as an option across the S lineup, letting buyers sharpen the ride further without sacrificing everyday comfort. As with the base car, early 987.1 S models retain the M96/M97 engine architecture and its associated intermediate shaft (IMS) bearing concern, along with a documented risk of bore scoring on some 3.4-liter examples, both items worth understanding when sourcing parts or evaluating a used example from this generation.
