The Boxster was Porsche's return to a mid-engine roadster for the first time since the 550 Spyder era, and its arrival in 1996 (as a 1997 model in the US) was significant for a deeper reason than just the car itself: the Boxster shared its front-end styling and much of its engineering with the then-new 996 911, and its strong sales success is widely credited with helping fund Porsche's development of that generation. Designer Grant Larson drew directly from the 550 Spyder and 356 Speedster for the shape, giving the 986 a deliberately retro-inspired roadster silhouette.

The base Boxster launched with a 2.5-liter flat-six at 201 hp, while the Boxster S arrived for 2000 with a larger 3.2-liter engine at 250 hp, adding real separation between the two trims for the first time. That same year, the base car grew to a 2.7-liter engine at 217 hp. A mid-cycle facelift for 2003 brought revised front and rear styling, a glass rear window with defroster replacing the old plastic unit, and modest power bumps across the board, with the base car reaching 228 hp and the S climbing to 258 hp. Porsche closed out the 986 generation for 2004 with the Boxster S 550 Spyder 50th Anniversary Edition, a limited run of 1,953 cars (500 for the US) commemorating the 550 Spyder's 1953 debut, finished exclusively in GT Silver Metallic with a cocoa-brown leather interior and a modest engine retune to 266 hp, making it the most powerful first-generation Boxster ever built.
