The 981 Boxster Spyder revealed at the 2015 New York Auto Show became the most powerful and hardcore Boxster Porsche had built to that point, and it did so by borrowing an engine that had no business fitting in a Boxster at all. Paying tribute to the 718 Spyder racers of the 1960s with its distinctive twin decklid humps, this Spyder shares its considerable engineering with the contemporary Cayman GT4, making it the roadster counterpart to that car's track-focused mission.
Power comes from a 3.8-liter naturally aspirated flat-six lifted from the 911 Carrera S, requiring a modified crankcase and different intake system to work in the Boxster's mid-mounted orientation, making 375 hp and 309 lb-ft, just 10 hp shy of the contemporary Cayman GT4's output from the same base engine. A 6-speed manual is the only transmission offered, no PDK was ever available on this car, a deliberate choice both for weight savings and driver engagement. Porsche quotes 0 to 60 mph in 4.3 seconds and a 180 mph top speed, making it the fastest and most powerful Boxster of the entire 981 generation.
Weight-conscious details run throughout: a lightweight fabric top still operated entirely by hand rather than with an electric mechanism, no radio or air conditioning as standard equipment (both available at no cost if desired), and a smaller-diameter steering wheel borrowed from the GT4 for quicker, more precise inputs. The chassis picks up a sport suspension lowered 20mm, brakes borrowed directly from the 911 Carrera, and a more aggressive aero kit with larger intakes for improved cooling. As the last naturally aspirated flat-six Boxster before Porsche's move to the turbocharged 718 generation, and with relatively limited production numbers, the 981 Spyder has become one of the most sought-after and collectible modern Porsches, prized specifically for combining lightweight construction, a genuine naturally aspirated engine, and a manual-only gearbox in a way no Boxster since has replicated.
