While every other Boxster in the 718 lineup traded its flat-six for a turbocharged flat-four, the Spyder held the line. Revealed in June 2019 alongside its coupe counterpart, the Cayman GT4, the 718 Spyder gave roadster buyers the one engine everyone had been asking for since the turbocharged era began, and it built the rest of the car specifically around that engine's character.
Power comes from a 4.0-liter naturally aspirated flat-six developed specifically for the Spyder and GT4, making 414 hp and 309 lb-ft (manual) or 317 lb-ft (PDK). It revs to 8,000 rpm with genuinely immediate throttle response, no turbo lag to manage, and shuts down one bank of cylinders under light load to help fuel economy without sacrificing character under load. A 6-speed manual was the only transmission offered at launch, with 7-speed PDK added as an option for the 2021 model year, itself paired with a stronger locking rear differential than the manual car receives. Porsche quotes 0 to 60 mph in 4.3 seconds with the manual, 3.8 seconds with PDK, and a top speed of 186 to 187 mph depending on transmission.
Underneath, the Spyder shares its chassis and much of its hardware directly with the Cayman GT4, giving it genuine track-capable dynamics in a roadster body, a rarity in this segment. A dedicated sport exhaust delivers a distinctly hard, clean sound that no turbocharged engine in the lineup can replicate, part of why this car has become the enthusiast's default answer when cross-shopping the modern 718 range. For buyers who wanted the naturally aspirated flat-six experience with the top down, the Spyder remained the only way to get it until the GTS 4.0 arrived a year later, and it stayed in production as the range's open-top flagship right through the end of 718 combustion production.
