Before there was a 718 badge on the car, there was the original Cayman GT4, and it changed what the Cayman was allowed to be. Revealed in 2015 for the 2016 model year, the 981-generation GT4 was the first Cayman to wear the GT badge, built with real input from Porsche Motorsport and openly described as a mini 911 GT3, right down to the parts it borrowed.
Power comes from a 3.8-liter naturally aspirated flat-six lifted from the 991 Carrera S, mid-mounted and tuned to 385 hp and 309 lb-ft, a jump from the GTS's 3.4-liter and 335 hp. It revs to 7,600 rpm and drives the rear wheels exclusively through a 6-speed manual, no PDK was ever offered on this car. Dynamic gearbox mounts, filled with a magnetic fluid that firms up under load, keep the drivetrain composed under hard use. Porsche quotes 0 to 60 mph in 4.2 seconds and a 183 mph top speed, both improvements over the GTS despite the GT4 carrying the same basic 981 architecture.
Chassis hardware came directly off the 911 GT3 parts shelf: front suspension, larger brakes, and a ride height dropped 30mm below the standard Cayman. A mechanical limited-slip differential is standard, split 22 percent locking under acceleration and 27 percent under engine braking. A larger front bumper with additional venting feeds an extra radiator, functional rather than cosmetic. This was also the car that proved the mid-engine Cayman platform could hang with, and in some measures beat, its 911 big brother, a reputation the GT4 nameplate has carried through every generation since.
