About this model 718 Cayman GT4 RS

If the standard GT4 brought the flat-six back to the 718 lineup, the GT4 RS answered the only question left unresolved: what happens when you drop the 911 GT3's race-bred engine into the lighter, mid-engine Cayman chassis. Revealed at the 2021 Los Angeles Auto Show with US customer deliveries beginning for the 2022 model year, the GT4 RS became the most track-focused road-going Cayman Porsche has ever built, and a fitting swan song for the gas-powered 718 platform.

The GT4 RS shares its 4.0-liter naturally aspirated flat-six directly with the 911 GT3, though a longer exhaust routing required by the mid-engine layout trims output slightly to 493 hp and 331 lb-ft, an increase of 79 hp over the standard GT4. The engine revs to 9,000 rpm, breathes through intake snorkels routed past the cabin with a carbon airbox mounted above the engine, and is paired exclusively to a 7-speed PDK, shortened for quicker acceleration. There is no manual option on this car. Porsche quotes 0 to 60 mph in 3.2 seconds, with independent testing running closer to 2.8, and a 196 mph top speed, faster than the GT4 with PDK.

Weight came out wherever Porsche could find it: carbon fiber reinforced plastic front fenders and hood, lightweight glass for the rear hatch, reduced sound deadening, and simple pull straps in place of door handles bring curb weight to 3,227 lbs, about 49 lbs lighter than a PDK-equipped standard GT4. The swan-neck fixed rear wing, borrowed from the 911 RSR and first seen on a road car on the 992 GT3, sits on aluminum supports for a marked aerodynamic step up from the standard GT4's manually adjustable wing. A mechanical limited-slip differential and Porsche Torque Vectoring come standard, and the optional Weissach package adds visible carbon on the hood, wing, intakes, and mirrors along with further weight savings.

  • Notable firsts: first 718 to receive the 911 GT3's flat-six directly
