The base Cayenne carried into the 957 facelift with a genuine engine upgrade rather than just a styling refresh, part of the broader across-the-board updates Porsche made when the lineup was reworked for the 2008 model year. It remained the entry point into the Cayenne range, sharing its VR6 engine architecture with the Volkswagen Touareg while still benefiting from Porsche's own suspension and chassis tuning.
The 3.6-liter VR6 produced 290 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque, a meaningful step up from the outgoing 3.2-liter unit's 250 hp, and enough for a 0 to 60 mph time in the mid-8 second range. Like its predecessor, the base Cayenne rode on conventional steel coil springs rather than the standard air suspension found on the Turbo and Turbo S, keeping the entry-level trim simpler and more affordable. A 6-speed manual transmission remained standard, with a 6-speed Tiptronic automatic available as an option.
