The 2017 model year marked the most controversial engineering decision in Cayman history: Porsche pulled the naturally aspirated flat-six and replaced it with a turbocharged flat-four, the first four-cylinder engine ever offered in a production Cayman. It was a move built for efficiency and low-end torque, and one that took the enthusiast community years to fully embrace, even as the numbers told a clear story of improvement over the outgoing car.
The base 718 Cayman is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged flat-four derived from the 911 Turbo's architecture, making 300 hp and 280 lb-ft, a 35 hp and 74 lb-ft gain over the final 981-generation base Cayman's naturally aspirated six. A 6-speed manual comes standard, with a 7-speed PDK dual-clutch available. With PDK and the Sport Chrono package, Porsche quotes 0 to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds and a 170 mph top speed, both improvements over the car it replaced despite losing two cylinders.
Chassis updates arrived alongside the new engine. A retuned sport suspension picked up a quicker steering rack borrowed from the 911 Turbo, and rear track grew wider with new tires to match. Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) and Porsche Torque Vectoring are both available options, letting buyers dial the base car closer to S-level dynamics without stepping up in price. It remains the entry point into the 718 lineup, and the platform that every GTS, GT4, and GT4 RS variant is built from.
