About this model 997.2 GT3 / GT3 RS

The 997.2 GT3 and GT3 RS carry the final iteration of the Mezger engine ever fitted to a road-going 911, a lineage tracing directly back to the twin-turbo unit developed for the GT1 Le Mans race car that won outright in 1998. Updated for the 2009 model year alongside the broader 997.2 facelift, both cars pushed the naturally aspirated GT3 formula about as far as Porsche has ever taken it before turbocharging entered the conversation for later generations.

The GT3 grew to a 3.8-liter displacement, up from 3.6, with VarioCam now adjusting exhaust as well as intake camshafts for the first time, making 435 hp and 317 lb-ft. A 6-speed manual is the only transmission offered. Porsche quotes 0 to 60 mph in roughly 3.9 seconds and a 193 mph top speed. The GT3 RS shares that same 3.8-liter block but is tuned to 450 hp thanks to specific engine work, revving to an 8,500 rpm redline via a single-mass flywheel, and pairs with shorter transmission ratios than the standard GT3, deliberately trading outright top speed for a sharper feel through the gears.

Both cars retain hydraulic power steering, a detail purists still point to as giving this generation feedback that later electrically-assisted GT3s can't fully replicate. PASM adaptive suspension and a mechanical limited-slip differential come standard on both, while the RS adds a widened body, polycarbonate rear window, and an adjustable rear wing for genuine homologation-grade downforce, built specifically to serve as the foundation for Porsche's GT3 racing program. Production numbers were modest even by GT3 standards: roughly 2,256 total 997.2 GT3 coupes were built through 2012, with the GT3 RS produced in even smaller numbers, making both cars notably scarcer today than their 991 and 992-generation successors.
